Art Open Studios with Elizabeth Howe

Hi to all,

We had a great fall session of art. I will soon be sending  out the schedule for the winter session that starts in January. Meanwhile we will be doing a few OPEN STUDIOs

Open Studio is a great time for students to explore forms of art that interest them and express their creativity.

Projects will be supervised and instruction given as needed but this is a time for them to explore.

My experience with Open Studio times is that students don't always create their most profound works, but they explore deeper their creative spirit. Thus studio time is just as important to creative development as regular classes.

Pay attention to the dates, but also the ages and times as they vary slightly from our regular session.

Your child is welcome to bring a friend with them, I just need to know who is planning on coming and if they will have a friend so I can make sure we have enough room for all.

Here is the schedule for the next few weeks 

Ages 4-10 - Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00 Class fee is $10 per each student includes materials and supplies

November Homeschool Rollerskating/ Sportsplex Day

Wednesday, November 18 from 1-3 pm will be our homeschool day at the UP Sportsplex. Cost will be $6 per participant and that covers all activities except putt putt golf. Rollerskating, bounce houses and slides, and the turf will all be included. Children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. The UP Sportsplex is located at 1110 Wright Street in Marquette. We have been having such large turnouts, that I think it will be safe to say RSVP is not needed.  Hope to see you there!

Junior Ecology

Hi all,

I have an NMU Extension Program Instructor who is interested in working regularly with a teen group to further education in natural biology/ecology, practice stewardship and work on team building skills. 

This is specifically for teens 13 and up. If you think you might have teens interested, please call/email/ text me how many. Also, if you are interested in attending the brainstorming session (TBD), please let me know.

Please feel free to extend this invitation to anyone else you might know who is not on this list, but be aware that sessions will occur during regular school hours.

I'll also be putting together a less formal "Nature Crew" for the 8-12 range - so feel free to email me any kids in that range who might be interested in this as well.

Just gauging interest at this point.

Tubing Party Update

Hey Everyone,

What a great response to the tubing party!  We have gotten enough families signed-up right now that I am going to have to close the sign-up and start a wait list.  There will probably be families who have schedule conflicts and I may be able to open it back up.  If I get a lot of people on the wait list I can help someone plan another tubing day.  I am sorry to have to do this, but only so many people can use the hill at one time. Not much fun to pay to stand in the cold.

November Mom's-Only White Elephant Party

Our next Mom's-only get together will be Monday, November 16 at 6:30pm. Since December gets busy with holiday events, this will be our Nov/Dec get together and we will be doing a white elephant party. Please bring a white elephant gift to exchange!

Homeschool Tubing Party

A homeschool tubing party has been scheduled at Al Quaal for January 29, 5-8pm.  I know it is a little early to think about snow, but they can get booked-up early so we're going to go ahead and get the ball rolling.  We are looking to get some preliminary numbers of people interested, so we can nail down the cost.

 

Here are the facts:

-cost will be $18-22 per family (depends on total attendance)
-the hill provides tubes and tows you back up the hill:)
-the lodge at the bottom of the hill is included with tables, bathrooms, water, and refridgerator
-we will have hot dogs and hot chocolate; please bring a snack to share.

UP Sportsplex Homeschool Day

Wednesday, October 14th from 1-3 pm will be our homeschool day at the UP Sportsplex. Cost will be $6 per participant and that covers all activities except putt putt golf. October field trip

A Home school Field Trip is planned for October 2nd, 9:45 am, at the DNR Fish Hatchery on Cherry Creek Road, Marquette (driveway is on Ford Rd).
We will meet in the visitor's center, the guided tour will take about an hour and you are free look around after that. Parents are required to accompany children. Homeschool 4-H Club

A new homeschool 4-H club called "Marquette Explorers 4-H Club" was started recently in Marquette County.  Meetings are held in the Peter White Library once a month, 12pm on a Tuesday.  This is the clubs facebook page:

The club welcomes all families to join us for a "Brushbot" project at our next meeting that's going to be held September 15, 12pm in the Arts and Culture Center, Room 1, basement of the Peter White Library.  Cost is $1. Mom's Only Meeting

Upcoming Art Classes with Elizabeth Howe

Fall 2015 Class Schedule – all classes will run for 10 weeks, from the week of September 16 – November 19 (The week before Thanksgiving) I ask if you sign up you do so for the whole session. Class fees are a little different per age group.

2-3 year olds – Wednesdays from 10:30- 11:30 am (parents are encouraged to participate) The students will explore different forms of art and explore the joy of creating. The parents will learn how to work with their children. Also learning how art not only stretches kids creative minds, but also fine and gross motor skill, special skill, confidence building and much more. Class fee is $10 a week, per student, includes all materials and supplies. Class is limited to 5 students.

4-6 year olds – Wednesdays from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. This class will explore skill building with the basics of art, as well as creative expression. We will be looking at many different forms for art. Class fee is $10 per week per students, includes materials and supplies. Class is limited to 6 students.

7-12 year olds - Thursdays from 4:30- 6:00 pm. This class deepens art skills, includes many forms of art. I like to focus on skill building at this age as they most like things to look the way they want. Creative expression will be explored but the focus is on practicing skills. Class fee will have an upfront fee of $30 and a weekly fee of $7 per students. Class limit is 8 students

High school – Thursdays from 2:30 – 4:00 pm. This class will qualify as a visual art credit. This year’s focus will be on the principles and elements of design. It is a different class than last year if someone is repeating it would qualify for a new credit. A scope and sequence will be provided. Class fee will have an upfront fee of $35 and a weekly fee of $7. Class limit is 10 students.

Classes are held at 715 W College Avenue in Marquette.

Curriculum Sale

The CHUMS curriculum sale is coming up on Friday, June 5 from 6-8 pm. It will be held at Bethel Baptist Church in Marquette. (829 Grove Street)  Please let us know if you want to sell some items and need a table. Everyone is welcome to come out and find some great deals for the next school year! March Homeschool UP Sportsplex Day

Mark your calendars for our next Homeschool UP Sportsplex Day: Tuesday, March 17 from 1-3 pm.  The cost will be $6/participant. Cost includes rollerskating, use of the bounce houses and slides, and turf room play. Please note it does not include miniature golf or the arcade games (which are in now)- those will be an extra charge for those who would like to do those.  Parents, please monitor your children, especially the bigger kids on the large slide.

Young Authors Information

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

Young Authors is rapidly approaching and it is time to sign up. The date is Tuesday, May 5, 2015. Young Authors is for students in grades K-5. This year, we will be attending all day, which includes an author session, a time for your kids to share a book or other writing they have done, lunch and an additional special activity.

AUTHOR:
The author this year will be science and nature author Buffy Silverman. Read more about her at her website: www.buffysilverman.com.

FEES AND INFORMATION:
We have 30 slots available. If those slots fill up, there will be a waiting list in the event of a cancellation. There will be a registration fee depending on how many kids are signed up (for example, if 30 kids sign up, the fee will be about $2.00 per child). Also, lunch will be an additional $5.00. Lunch will consist of chicken nuggets, tater tots, fruit or veggie, milk and ice cream. T-shirts will be available for purchase later in March.

HOW TO REGISTER:
To register, send a Facebook PM to me (or email: kmillin1969@att.net) with the names and grades of your children. Deadline will be FEBRUARY 28 (so we can send out information regarding t-shirts.)

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. I will do my best to answer them!

CHANGE IN TIME TO UP SPORTSPLEX DAY ON THE 20th!!!!

The UP Sportsplex has requested to change our time on the 20th from 1-3pm to 3-5 pm. So we will be meeting on January 20th, from 3-5 pm. Due to the inconvenience, they are lowering the price to $4/participant.  If you have already rsvp'd and can still attend, there is no need to let me know again.
