BOWLING ACTIVITY

We are going to be having a bowling activity on the next scheduled Harbor Day.  For those that are already planning on coming, this will be in place of Harbor Day, as it gets a little cold down there in November!  So, the date is set for Wednesday, November 20, at 1pm.  It is at the Country Village Lanes in Ishpeming.  They gave us a great deal of two games and shoes for $5/kid.  Parents can bowl also.  Some are and some aren't, as they have little ones to watch after.  There will be lanes with bumpers available.  They have also offered to do a weekly time for the home school group for anyone interested in lessons/group time.  It is the same cost.  We will see how many are interested on the bowling activity day.

So, if you could let me know if you would like to attend, I need to get them a total the week before.  I just need your name, and the names and ages of your children.  Also, you can let me know if you are interested in a weekly group.

Some of you may already know about this from FB.  I am working on an email list from those that are interested in getting info from our group.  If you'd rather just get it on FB, just let me know, and I'll take you off the list.  :)

Thanks so much!

Shannon

Visual Art Class available this coming school year from Elizabeth Howe

If you are interested, please let me know the name and ages of the children participating: marquettechums@yahoo.com.  This does require a weekly commitment,  and we ask that only people who are serious and committed to attending regularly register, as the class size is limited.

Class Description. - This class is an introduction to Composition and Design as the structure of art. It teaches the principles of good composition and design through the use of the elements and principles of design, tools and techniques. Exploring the elements and principles, through the use of multiple mediums, art history, artistic movements and self expression.

This class can be used as a visual art credit for middle-school and high school students.
To receive one full credit students would have to participate in classes and complete homework from Sept - April.
Students can participate in Fall session only from Sept - Dec and receive a half credit.

Classes will be at my home studio which is about 17 miles out of Marquette on county road 550 toward Big Bay. It takes about 20 minutes with out snow. Any days we determine to be snow days, we may have the option to live video, or at least emailing of lessons concepts and homework. I have done this type of co-op with other families from town and we have never had to cancel due to snow.
I understand that some people interested have to come from Ishpeming or Negaunee and my studio is not convenient.
Having the class at my studio allows me to offer this class. As the time for packing, and unpacking supplies as well as travel to another location consumes so much of a day we get no other school done that day. It also allows me to offer the class at a very affordable cost as everything we need is right here.

Class will be Tuesdays at 2:00
Beginning Sept 17
cost will be $5.00 per student per week. This will cover most materials.  There will be a fee of $10.00 each family at the first class in addition to the $10.00 to cover the cost of a small textbook.

The class will include many art projects, as well as discussions about art and the purposes of art, and some written assignments. It is a class that can be good for 7 grade - highschool.

Any questions and people can email me at bemedropin@msn.com  or call  my home at 906-345-9348
A full schedule of classes and a scope and sequence will be available by next week for those interested.
We will run most weeks, with time off for holidays.
Thanks Elizabeth

Art Summer Camp Specifics from Elizabeth Howe

SUMMER ART CAMP
Sculpture- This is a basic class exploring the ideas, techniques, and terminology of sculpture.  Student will complete a few
sculptures over the course of the week.  This class is great for students of a variety of ages as projects are geared to meet the student where they are at as far as age and motor-skills, while building and strengthening those abilities.  This is a great chance for kids to explore their creative and design skills and critical thinking skills.  We will not be doing clay as that is a class on its own.
Dates: June 24-28
Time: 1-3 pm each day
Place: Calvary Baptist Church
Ages: 6 and up

Beth Farmer will be taking registration names and number of students, including their ages and phone numbers.
Cost is $40.0 for the week for each student.
For Families with 3 or more, cost is the $40.00 for the week for each of the first 2 students and $15.00 for the week  for each additional student.  Cost includes materials and supplies.
Payment will be due on the first day of camp.

No open toed shoes or sandals will be allowed during camp due to the nature of the project.
Each student should bring a small snack and drink so we can keep our brains sharp.

One of  our projects will be done with found objects. Students need to bring found objects that they would like to make into a sculpture. Each student needs to have their object(s) in a bag with their names on them. AND BRING THEM ON THE FIRST DAY OF CAMP.  The goal is to think outside the box and come up with some unusual object to turn into something. They do not need to know what they think they want to turn them into yet, but just bring objects that they think will inspire them.  We will be discussing what everyone has brought in and create a plan, on the first day. We will not begin using them until later in the week.  They can bring as many objects as they choose.

PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION carefully several times to make sure you've got all the information included.
I need a commitment as much as possible by June 11, which is one week from today, so I can order materials and supplies in time for camp. Class will be limited to 15 students. I can do more that that if there is more older students 10 and up.  So let Beth know of your interest early so we can make a plan.
Please call me if you have any questions, or special circumstances.

Japanese Exchange Program Opportunity

From Brian Wibby:

I am an Educator with the 4-H Youth Development Program of Michigan State University Extension.  I coordinate an international exchange program which brings a delegation of youth (ages 12-16) from Japan to Michigan for 4 weeks this summer.  I am desperately searching for Michigan families who would be able to host a Japanese student in their home July 27-August 23, 2013.   Families do not need to be involved in the 4-H program in order to host, this program is open to ALL Michigan families!
A flyer with information about the exchange program, as well as the profiles of the Japanese youth who I need to find host families for is available to see here:http://www.msue.msu.edu/objects/content_revision/download.cfm/revision_id.630942/workspace_id.-30/Michigan%204-H%20Japan%20Delegate%20List.pdf/
Host families have the option of picking-up and dropping off their Japanese student in Dearborn, Lansing, Mount Pleasant, Grayling, Mackinaw City, or Marquette.  During the exchange, host families are not required to participate in any specific activities, although many host families choose to attend some local 4-H events, county fairs, or get together with other host families in their area.  Host families do not need to be able to speak Japanese in order to host.  The Japanese youth can sleep in a bedroom with a child of the same sex, but they do need to have their own bed or mattress.
Families interested in hosting one of the students may contact me to receive an application packet, or they can download a packet from here:http://4h.msue.msu.edu/uploads/files/2013%20Japan%20Summer%20Inbound%20-%20Host%20Family%20Application%20Packet.pdf

We generally have quite a few homeschool families participate in this exchange program, and the hands-on, experiential learning nature of the program fits especially well with the educational philosophies of many homeschooling families.  I would be greatly appreciative if you would consider sharing this with other families that you know who might be interested in hosting one of the remaining students!
I'd be grateful to answer any questions you have about the exchange.  Thank you very much for your time and consideration!
Brian

Summer Art Camp Week

An Art Sculptures Class with Elizabeth Howe will be held June 24-28 from 1-3pm at Calvary Baptist Church in Negaunee.

If you have already responded with the names and ages of your children, you do not need to reply as I have them registered. However, if you have not RSVP'd and would like to take part, please email me the names and ages of the children participating.

Please take note that this is not a drop and run event.  Parents are to be responsible for their own children, and siblings who are not participating are not to be running around unsupervised.  Parental involvement and help is encouraged during the class.

For those participating in the class, Elizabeth would like the kids to begin looking now for objects they can turn into a sculpture. She encourages everyone to "think outside the box".  Also, if you have paper tubes, please start collecting them for the class.

Cost of the class will be posted soon.

Art Class Survey

For those interested in art, Elizabeth Howe is willing to offer some more classes for homeschoolers.  In order to figure out a schedule and what to teach, I need some input from you as we work it all out.  There are many types of art classes she can teach, some of which do not require the Drawing and Color Theory she did last year.  So even if you haven't taken art from Elizabeth before, you may be able to participate in these next classes, depending on what type we decide on.

First, let me know what art classes you'd be interested in. Elizabeth suggested the following:
Sculptures, painting, china silk, mix media, fiber art.

Secondly, she'd like the number and ages of kids interested.

Thirdly, what do you feel about summer camps? She could do classes during the summer 2 hours a day for 5 days, rather than once a week.

Please email me at marquettechums@yahoo.com ASAP and I will contact Elizabeth with the results so that we can move on with our planning.  Thank you!
