January UP Sportsplex Event 2015

Mark your calendars for our next Homeschool UP Sportsplex day: January 20 (Tuesday) from 1-3 pm! Please read carefully as there are price and activity changes.  The cost will be $5/ participant. This price includes rollerskating and skate rental, all inflatables including the mega slide, and turf room play.  The mini golf course and arcade will be up and running but are not included in the $5. Mini golf may be played at the extra cost of $3 for 9 holes OR $5 for 18 holes. Arcade games are 25cents  per token.  If possible, please RSVP at marquettechums@yahoo.com.  Thank you in advance to all who RSVP. This is very helpful to the staff so they can be prepared for our group.

Rollerskating today- all home schoolers welcome!

The UP Sportsplex event is today from 1-3.  If you didn't RSVP, but would still like to come, please do!  I just need to know if we go over 50 for staffing purposes, and enough people RSVP'd to make it well over 50.  Thanks to all those who responded, and we'll see you there!

UP Sportsplex Homeschool Day- Rollerskating, Putt-Putt Golf & Bounce Houses!

Monday, November 24 from 1-3pm  will be our next Homeschool Rollerskating day at the UP Sportsplex in Marquette.  Please note that cost will be $6/ participant because we will have use of the rollerskating rink, bounce houses and putt-putt golf.  The $6 includes everything, including skate rental.  Please RSVP to marquettechums@yahoo.com so I can let them know how many of us to expect.  Hope to see you there!

Mom's only meeting

The Mom's Only meeting for October will meet Monday, October 20th at 6:30 pm. Please note a change- we will be meeting at Erica Smith's house this month. (If you want to look at some Lilla Rose products, you are welcome to come at 6 pm when we'll be doing a Lilla Rose Party beforehand.) Archery Class Sign Up

Archery Classes - 

We have the opportunity for 30 students to do archery classes at Straightline Archery in Ishpeming.  They occasionally do these for Enrichment classes through the NICE public school system.  However, they are doing this one just for us as home schoolers.  They are going to do nine classes, and your student(s) must attend at least six of the nine.  They can attend all nine, but for a count and to make it worth their while, you must attend/pay for a minimum of six classes.  The classes will be $4 each per student.  So, for one student, it would be a minimum of $24 dollars.  (6 classes x $4)  So, if they do all nine classes, it would be $36/student.  The classes will all be in (the first three weeks of) November from 2-3pm, T-Th.  So, the dates are 4,5,6,11,12,13,18,19,20 of Nov..  This way, if your kid has a piano lesson every Thursday at 2pm, you don't have to worry about missing either.  You pick the six you want to go to.  There are some requirements.  Your student must be at least four feet tall.  If they are less than four feet tall, they would need to have their own equipment.  They do not have a lot of equipment for little ones.  Even though your younger children may not be able to participate, they do have a sitting area where you can sit with your younger ones, if you have an older one that would like to participate.  So, you don't have to worry about a sitter.  You just have to keep your kids from running around.  Also, if there aren't enough kids that sign up, we will open it up to parents as well.  So, if you're an interested parent that would like to do archery with your student, let me know when you reply.  I'll let the interested parents know of openings, once I have a total of students.  To sign up, please email Shannon at kemps4christ@yahoo.com.  Please put "ARCHERY SIGN UP" in the subject line for the email.   Please include your students' names and ages, and parents' names if they want to participate also.  Payment ($24) will be due at the first class, and there will be no refunds.  If you do more than six classes, you can pay $4/student when you attend the extra classes.

Upcoming Home school Bowling Activity

Bowling Activity - Thursday, December 4, 1-3pm.

$5/student includes 2 games and shoes.  If you choose not to bowl two games or to not use shoes, it is still $5.  You must wear bowling shoes to bowl.  I can take up to 64 students for this activity.  They will have bumper lanes available for little ones.  They will allow four students per lane.  To RSVP, email Shannon at Kemps4christ@yahoo.com and put "Bowling Activity Sign Up"  in the subject line.  Please include the number of students participating.

Homeschool Rollerskating Day!

Tuesday, October 21st will be home school rollerskating day at the UP Sportsplex in Marquette. Join us from 1-3 pm for a fun time of rollerskating.  The green turf room will be available as well. In addition, there is a bounce house for younger kids. Parents, please help supervise the bounce house rules as well as making sure that only children 10 and under are allowed on the bounce house.  Prices are the same as last year- $4/participant. This price includes skate rental.  The UP Sportsplex is located at 1110 Wright Street in Marquette.  While RSVP is not necessary, it would be appreciated to get a general idea of how many are coming so the sportsplex knows how many staff members are needed. Piano Lessons

Mom's-Only Meeting

Our first Mom's-only meeting of the school season will be starting up Tuesday, September 23 at 6:30 pm.  All homeschooling moms are encouraged to come for a fun time of visiting and fellowship. Homeschooling Picnic

Our homeschooling picnic is this Saturday (the 13th), from 1pm 'til whenever at Presque Isle.  Bring your table settings and meat to grill, then a dish to pass.  We will have our grill there, and will be in the little pavilion on the left just past the ice cream shop.  Dress warm, it is supposed to be cooler.  There was a good amount of dad's there last year, so dad's please come!

September 23, 2014  “Michigan’s Raptors: Birds of Prey”

Presenter:  Jerome Maynard, Chocolay Raptor Center

            This program will be an introduction to the raptors of Michigan.  Mr. Maynard will discuss raptor’s roles in the ecosystem, their interactions with humans, and threats and impacts of habitat destruction and climate change.  Artifacts from birds will be used to demonstrate the magic of feathers, how raptors catch their prey, and how they live in the wild.  There will be live birds for group members to observe up close and personal – and to take photographs too!

October 28, 2014  “Tombstones Can Talk – An Historic Tour of Negaunee’s Park Cemetery”

Tour Leader:  Barry James, Historian, Michigan Iron Industry Museum

Get into the Halloween spirit by visiting a local cemetery!  We shouldn’t be scared of cemeteries; they are great places to learn about history, people, tombstones, architecture and local communities.  During the tour we will visit the Negaunee Cemetery and learn about gravesites, funeral customs and explore burial plots.  The tour will be rain or shine – be prepared for poor weather – then back to the museum for light refreshments.

November 18, 2014  “From Ducks to Diversity: A History of the Seney Wildlife Refuge ”

Presenter:  Jennifer McDonough, Park Ranger/Visitor Services Specialist, Seney National Wildlife Refuge

The land that is now the Seney National Wildlife Refuge has felt the hands of human manipulation both before and after it's designation as a refuge. How has the landscape been impacted? Why was it established as a refuge? What were the early management goals and how do they differ from today's? Located in the east-central portion of the U.P., the 95,238-acre refuge encompasses the 25,150-acre Seney Wilderness Area.  Ms. McDonough’s program will discuss the history and wildlife of this National Natural Landmark.

Art Class Update

Preschool Art class has been officially set for Wednesdays from 4:00- 5:00. and has only one spot still available. Please note the time slot is different than original flyer. (Instead of 2:00-3:00, it will be 4:00-5:00).

Thursday classes  all still have openings.

Ages 7-12 year  12:30-2:00 and the 2nd class from 4:30 - 6:00

Ages 13 and up. 2:30 - 4:00

Hi to all,

Hope this info comes to you in time, as you plan your fall and school activities. If you are like me you are still trying to eek out every bit of summer you can.

Please review this  information carefully as each age group will be slightly different.

You will notice that there is no specific spot for 6 year olds. They will be placed in to either the 3-5 year old class or the 7 and ups. I like to base this on both cognitive, and fine  motor skills, so the decision is made on an individual bases, with the parents.

All the art classes will have a general art theme working across the spectrum of drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media. The projects and assignments will be different though for each age level with the 13 and up being high school level. I would also like to do some digital photography which requires a little more work on parents parts to get photo’s produced each week. We will discuss this once the class is set to see how participating parents feel about it.

All classes will be on going. I am just asking that you commit to a whole session. Classes will meet once a week with homework to do in between. Class fee can be paid each week, there will be a small fee at beginning of each session for materials. (See individual class)

Session One - Begins the week of Sept 7, 2014 and ends the week before Thanksgiving.  ( it’s about 11 weeks)

Session Two – Begins the week of January 5, 2015 and ends the week of May 11, with 2 weeks off (to be determined) for spring break. (approximately 12 weeks.)

I will be in the YMCA in Neguanee on Tuesdays from 4:30-6 doing the Intro to Drawing and Color Theory. All other classes will be held in my home.

3-5 year olds. Limit 6 students. I am looking at 2:00 – 3:00 Wednesdays, or similar time on Wednesday afternoons. Give me your feedback about the time.  Class fee will be $10.00 a week includes all materials and supplies. No material fee upfront.

7-12 year olds. Limit 8-10 students. Thursday 12:30 – 2:00 and also 4:30 – 6. I am offering 2 time slots for this age group as I want to offer an after school time slot but also accommodate home schooler’s who want to be done during the day. Class fee each week is $7.00 with a $20.00 material fee for Session One also due the first week of class.

13-and up. Limit 8-10 students High school level. Each session will give you a ½ credit toward a Visual art credit for highschool if you want the full credit you will need to attend both sessions and complete all assignments. Thursdays 2:30 -4:00. This class will focus on both the building of skill, creative problem solving and individual expression and design. Class fee is $7.00 a week with a $25.00 material fee for Session One also due the first week of class.

I’m sure there will be more info as we go, but this will give most of you a good idea of what this year will look like.

Homeschool Beach Day

This Thursday (July 24), we'll be heading to the beach and invite anyone interested to join us!  We'll be meeting at Whetmore Landing (Access is found off of CR 550 across the road from Harlow Lake) from 2-4 pm, weather permitting.  Hope to see you there!

Fireworks!

If you are looking for fireworks to celebrate the upcoming holiday, be sure to stop by the fireworks tent in the Marquette Walmart parking lot.  You'll be supporting a great homeschooling family too!  Happy Fourth of July!

The Voice of the Martyrs' Regional Conference

April Homeschool Rollerskating Event

We will be having one more Homeschool Rollerskating Event in April.  (It will probably be our last one for this school year unless our winter weather continues into May...)  All homeschoolers are welcome to join us at UP Sportsplex on Monday, April 21 from 2-4 pm.  UP Sportplex is located at 1110 Wright Street in Marquette.  Cost is $4 per participant and includes skate rental.  You are welcome to bring rollerblades from home if you prefer, but this does not affect the already reduced price.  Any questions can be sent to marquettechums@yahoo.com.  Hope to see you there!

March Mom's-Only Meeting

Luge opportunity for families and homeschoolers

The Upper Peninsula Luge Club is offering families a chance to try the luge on Friday nights.  The cost is $10 for the whole family.  If you like it and decide to get a club membership, the $10 will go toward the membership fee ($75).  There is also a homeschool time for luge on Monday at 12 noon for members.  For more information visit The Upper Peninsula Luge Club online.
